- FAQ
Answers to Your Most Common Questions
Swindon's architectural landscape is surprisingly diverse, from the Grade II listed Railway Village to the characterful streets of Old Town and the growing number of contemporary developments across the borough. Whatever your project, the answers below cover the practical details our clients ask about most. Still curious about something specific? Give us a call.
How much should I expect to spend?
Every door and window we produce is made to measure, so we do not work from a fixed price list. As a budgeting guide for the Swindon and Wiltshire area: internal steel doors (single leaf) range from £2,500 to £4,500, external doors start around £3,800 and can exceed £7,000, steel-framed windows sit between £900 and £1,600 per square metre, and internal screens fall in the £1,500 to £3,000 per square metre bracket. The exact figure depends on dimensions, glazing, finish, hardware, and fire-rating requirements. We provide a transparent, itemised quote once we understand your project.
What is the lead time from order to completion?
Plan for roughly 8 weeks between approving final drawings and completed installation. More intricate designs or larger developments may require additional time, which we communicate upfront. We stay in regular contact throughout manufacturing so you always know how things are progressing.
Do you charge for the initial site visit?
No. We carry out a free survey for every project across Swindon and the surrounding region. Our team records precise measurements, inspects the existing openings, and discusses your design preferences face to face. This is particularly valuable for older properties in Old Town or the Railway Village, where openings can be irregular and original features need preserving.
Steel or aluminium, which performs better?
Steel offers slimmer sightlines, down to approximately 20 mm, versus 40 to 60 mm for aluminium, and a lifespan of 50 years or more compared to 30 to 40 years. Modern thermally broken steel systems comply fully with Part L building regulations, so thermal efficiency is no longer a meaningful gap. Aluminium's main advantage is cost, generally 20 to 40 per cent less for a comparable specification. For Swindon's blend of heritage and modern architecture, the ultra-slim profiles and enduring character of steel make it the preferred choice for most of our clients.
What do E30 and EI30 fire ratings mean in practice?
E30 is the most common residential rating, ensuring the door prevents flames and smoke from passing through for 30 minutes. Our E30 doors use 40 mm profiles with 20 mm bars. EI ratings add heat insulation: EI30, EI60, and EI90 doors resist fire, smoke, and heat for 30, 60, or 90 minutes respectively, with minimum 40 mm profiles and bars. Toughened safety glass ranges from 8 mm to 16 mm depending on certification. All components are 100 per cent steel, hinges included, in single and double configurations. For HMOs and multi-occupancy buildings in Swindon, Approved Document B typically dictates the required standard. We can assess your fire strategy and recommend the right specification.
Are Crittall and Crittall-style doors the same thing?
Not quite. Crittall is a registered trademark of Crittall Windows Ltd, manufacturing in Essex since 1884, using proprietary profiles with lead times often stretching to 12 or 16 weeks. Crittall-style glazing is produced by independent specialists like C&K Steel Doors, achieving the same narrow frames and grid-pane aesthetic with complete design freedom, an 8-week lead time, and pricing typically 15 to 30 per cent lower. The finished product is visually identical.
Can I install steel glazing in a listed or heritage property?
Yes. Swindon has a rich heritage, with the Railway Village alone containing over 300 Grade II listed cottages and conservation areas in Old Town, Town Gardens, and surrounding villages. Steel is often considered appropriate by Swindon Borough Council, especially in 1920s to 1950s properties where the original fenestration was steel-framed. Listed Building Consent is required for any alterations, and Article 4 Directions may limit permitted development rights in conservation areas. We prepare the detailed drawings and specifications your application needs and can liaise with the council's conservation officers. Consent in Swindon generally takes 8 to 13 weeks, so early engagement is advisable.
Where do you operate?
We are based in Swindon and serve clients throughout Wiltshire, including Marlborough, Devizes, Chippenham, and Malmesbury. We also cover Oxford, Cheltenham, the Cotswolds, and London (including Enfield, Harrow, and New Malden). If your property is further afield, contact us and we will confirm feasibility.
